[Summer 2019 – Columbus, OH]
This summer, we grew three varieties of corn; Glass-gem Corn, Sweet Corn, and Dent Corn. We used our seeds saved from last year’s harvest to grow sweet corn. We grew corn together with squash and bean varieties using the Native American three-sister technique. Bean plants provide nitrogen for corn and corn helps them to climb, while squash plants cover the soil and keep it moist. At first, we had to cover our corn bed until corn seedlings were 4-5 inches tall using a bird-net because crows and blackbirds love to eat corn seeds. We harvested most of our sweet corn and dent corn as baby-corn. We happily shared more than half of our harvest with squirrels, raccoons, and deer.
