Cucumber

[Summer 2019 – Columbus, OH]

This summer we grew three varieties of cucumber; Marketmore, Boston Pickling & Straight Eight. We were a little bit late to plant them, but all our seeds quickly germinated. We put-up a separate trellis for cucumber and raised bitter melon and sugar snap peas on one side of it. At first, all the plants were healthy, but, with the scorching sun in July, almost all the plants got powdery mildew disease. After treating them with neem oil, they came back into life and started producing fruits. From all the three varieties Boston Pickling gave us the highest yield. When you grow cucumbers, do not let the fruits to ripe in the vine unless you want to save seeds. Because when there is a ripen cucumber, the plant naturally stops producing more.
