Green Beans

[Summer 2019 – Columbus, OH]

This summer we grew three varieties of green beans; Blue Lake Bush Beans, Contender Bush Beans, and Green Beans – Provider. We raised them together with glass gem corn – a native American corn variety. Beans provide nitrogen for corn and corn helps them to climb; this is also a native American farming technique. First, we put the corn seeds, covered with a bird net, and let them grow up to 6″ height. Then we removed the net and planted the beans. Corn needs regular weeding; otherwise, they do not grow well. But, as we raised them with bush bean varieties, they covered the ground and eliminated the growth factors for weeds. Rather than doing hard work and monocropping, it is always better to use simple techniques as the nature dose. So, after one and a half months, we were able to harvest our first batch of matured green beans.
