Evening Primrose

[Summer 2019 – Columbus, OH]

This plant voluntarily grew in our wildflower bed. Although we did not identify this plant at first, we let it grow. Evening primrose is native to America, and Native Americans use this plant as a herb and in their recipes. Our plant is five and a half feet tall. Its roots, leaves, flowers, and seeds all are edible. Leaves are edible before flowering. Flowers are bright yellow, have four petals, open in the evening, and do not have any significant smell. In some areas, people use this plant for landscaping.
