Ceylon Spinach

[Summer 2019 – Columbus, OH]

Ceylon spinach is also known as Malabar spinach. These plants grow well in tropical regions throughout the whole year. In the other areas, we can grow them in summer. Ceylon spinach can be propagated from either seeds or cuttings. They grow as vines and need less care.
This summer we grew Ceylon spinach from seeds. They took around two weeks to germinate. Fertile soil and regular watering are essential facts for their healthy growth. It is a common leafy green vegetable used in Indian and Sri Lankan cuisines. We can add them into curries, soups, salads or stir-fries. But my favorite is deep fried Ceylon spinach leaves after dipping them in the besan flour batter.
