Spaghetti Squash

[Summer 2019 – Columbus, OH]

For the very first time this year, we grew spaghetti squash in our plot. This variety is native to Central America. These plants are super easy to grow and highly nutritious. Both male and female flowers grow on the same plant. The color of the matured fruit can be ivory, yellow, or orange. Using the three sister technique, we grew spaghetti squash with corn and beans.

We planted our seeds in mid-May. After two and half months we harvested our very first spaghetti squash weighed 883 grams. Our plants are still producing more fruits, so we are expecting to enjoy them as much as we can. Some of our squash plants got fungal diseases like powdery mildew. We used neem oil and was able to control its effect. Not only the fruits we also enjoyed their male flowers in different recipes. We usually pick them in the evening, because we want to let bees to enjoy their fresh organic meals.
