Celery

[Summer 2018 – Columbus, OH]

A packet of ‘Celery Tall Utah Improved’ variety was in our seed pack. We had no plan to grow celery. So we did not even try to find how to grow them. But in late June we decided to plant the seeds directly on the soil in our okra bed. As we didn’t see any celery seedlings with the time, we forgot it. Surprisingly in mid-October, while we were cleaning our plot, these lovely celery plants were found. We made a tasty salad from it and then decided to find tips on how to grow celery.

So these are my findings,

  • Celery has a very long growing season
  • Very low tolerance for heat and cold
  • We need to start celery seeds indoor in February if we want to plant them in May. (2.5 to 3 months before the growing season)
  • Need some shade on the hottest part of the day
  • Need a nutrient-rich soil
  • Need regular watering to keep the soil moist
