[Summer 2017 – Columbus, OH]
2017, our very first experience of growing corn was a success beyond our expectations. We learned a lot about corn and its growing tips such as companion planting and frequent weeding. Those were very helpful for our second year.
[Summer 2018 – Columbus, OH]
This summer, we grew Golden Bantam, an open-pollinated heirloom corn variety. We planted our seeds in mid-May and did regular weeding otherwise corn won’t grow well. Corn needs nitrogen-rich soil. So we grew corn together with bean, mung, and cowpea. Companion planting plays a critical roll in organic gardening. Here corn helps bean, mung and cowpea vines to climb and they provide nitrogen to corn. These lovely mutual relationships among plants make it easy for us to maintain healthy vegetable beds with high yields.
