[Summer 2017 – Columbus, OH]
Our first try to grow beetroot was a pleasant experience with a lovely bunch of dark red bulbs in early August. They took nearly three months to develop edible roots after planting the seeds directly in the soil. Beetroots prefer fertile soil, regular watering, and frequent weeding to give a successful harvest.

This year we grew ‘Detroit Dark Red’ beet variety. Unfortunately, most of the seeds didn’t germinate. We got a few beet plants and sparrows ate almost all the beet greens by leaving only one tiny plant for us. Anyhow, I was able to make a tasty, lovely beetroot salad using it.
